SECTION II

The Labor Market Rationale for Other Ways to Win

If the goal of students is future economic security, the focus of their postsecondary planning should be on obtaining job skills that prepare them to compete for a limited supply of high skill/high wage work. This focus differs significantly from that of getting a 4-year college degree on the basis of the naive faith that it will lead to a good job. This advice is particularly suited for high school graduates from the academic middle of their graduating class because odds are that they will not be among those who ultimately will find a college-level job even if they do actually graduate with a university degree. Many of those in the academic middle would have been better off if they had considered other alternatives. And they, their parents, and the population in general would be better off to heed this message from the U.S. Department of Labor:

Workers with less education, but who are employed in jobs that require special skills or training, earn as much as [4-year] college graduates who do not require [skills] training to get their jobs. (Eck, 1993, p. 37)
